Why Choose Us
The Reasons Clients Choose Waktu Mutiara, and Come Back
There is no shortage of watch repair options in Johor Bahru. What follows is an honest account of what makes this workshop different — and why that difference tends to matter to the people who bring their watches here.

Six Things That Set This Workshop Apart
Work Carried Out by Hand
Every movement that comes through the workshop is disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled by hand. No automated shortcuts, no batch-processing of multiple watches at once.
Fifteen Years of Focused Practice
The principal watchmaker has spent over fifteen years on mechanical and automatic movements — not spread across other trades, but concentrated entirely on the craft of horology.
Prices Stated in Full Before Work Begins
Each service has a published price. You are quoted before any work begins. If something unexpected arises, we contact you first — no bills appear without prior discussion.
Honest Assessments, Not Upselling
We recommend only what a watch genuinely needs. If a case refinishing is unnecessary, we say so. If a movement is beyond cost-effective repair, we say that too, and explain why.
Particular Care for Sentimental Pieces
Inherited watches, gifts, and pieces with personal significance are treated with the same regard we would give to something of our own. The character of a well-worn piece is worth preserving.
Written Record of Every Overhaul
Overhaul clients receive a written condition note describing the movement's state before and after service. It travels with the watch and serves as a record for future service.
In Depth
Expertise Built Over a Decade and a Half
The principal watchmaker at Waktu Mutiara trained in classical Swiss movement service before returning to Johor Bahru in 2009. In the years since, the work here has covered a wide range of calibres — from entry-level Japanese automatics to multi-complication Swiss movements — and that breadth of experience informs every assessment and service decision.
- Training in Swiss movement service techniques
- Over 1,800 watches serviced since 2009
- Experience across mechanical, automatic, and quartz calibres
- Particular familiarity with vintage and heritage movements
"The difference between a well-serviced watch and one that has been hurried through a repair is something you feel in the wrist within a few days."
— Radzuan Ariffin, Principal Watchmaker
Equipment Used Here
- Ultrasonic cleaning tank for movement parts
- Electronic timing machine (Multigrapher) for regulation
- Pressure testing equipment for water-resistance verification
- Swiss-sourced lubricants appropriate to each movement type
- Watchmaker's loupe and stereo microscope for fine work
The Right Tools, Used Correctly
A watchmaker is only as good as the tools and materials available. At Waktu Mutiara, ultrasonic cleaning replaces chemical baths that can leave residue in movement parts. Electronic timing equipment provides accurate measurement of rate across multiple positions. Swiss-formulated lubricants are selected for the specific requirements of each calibre — not a single general-purpose oil applied to everything.
A Service That Respects Your Time and Your Watch
From the first conversation to the moment you collect, the aim is to make the experience clear and unhurried. We explain what we find, what we propose, and what the work will cost. We do not contact you to request additional authorisation for work you did not ask for. If a watch needs more than the agreed service, we discuss it — and wait for your answer before proceeding.
- Written quote before work begins
- Clear timeline communicated at intake
- Updates if anything changes during service
- Replaced parts returned for your inspection
Fair Pricing for Thorough Work
The prices at Waktu Mutiara reflect the time and materials a proper service requires — not the minimum that could be charged while still calling it a repair. A complete overhaul at RM 240 includes disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, re-lubrication, regulation, and a settling period. That is a full service, not a partial one.

What Makes Us Different
Three Things You Will Not Find Everywhere
The Written Condition Record
Overhaul clients receive a handwritten note on the movement's state — what was found, what was done, and what was observed during the settling period. This record travels with the watch as a permanent part of its history.
The Free Initial Assessment
Bring a watch to the counter during opening hours and we will look at it — inspect the movement through the caseback, listen to it running, and give you an honest opinion — at no charge and with no pressure to proceed.
Replaced Parts Returned
Any part replaced during a service — gaskets, a crystal, a battery — is set aside in a small envelope and returned with the watch. You know exactly what was changed and can verify it yourself.
